Teacher Time: Seaport Village

Our school recently had our annual auction. This year there was a silent auction for "teacher time". The teacher gets to choose an activity to do on a weekend with a students and one of his friends and families bid on it. This year I decided to take the kids to Seaport Village and ride the carousel, have hot cocoa and read books at the Upstart Crow book store, and then take a ferry ride to Coronado and have a picnic lunch by the beach. We had so much fun!

Here we are the the Upstart Crow.

The boys chose a book to buy.

We rode the carousel.

We took the ferry to Coronado. The boys liked looking at the Midway from the ferry.

This is us on the beach at Coronado.

We had a great day!

Wild Things Play 2016

At the end of April we performed our version of Where the Wild Things Are.  We had a lot of fun.

Here is our class all dressed up.

I made this Max decoration and displayed it at the gate as the audience walked into the school.

We made vines out of green paper.

Monster footprints showed the way to the hall. We also made a wild thing mouth for the doorway.

We decorated all of the classroom doors as wild things.

The students had to walk through this wild thing door. The sign on the door says "Wild Things Enter Here".

This is the set for Max' room.

This is the set for where the wild things live.

These are our programs.

The room moms made these yummy treats for us to eat after the play.

The students are ready for the play.

Our Max was awesome!

Class Auction Items

Every year my school has an auction. Each class makes an auction item. This year, my class made three beautiful paintings.

Gerbera Daisy

The kindergarten students made this giant gerbera daisy with tempera paints. They started by putting dots of yellow, orange and pink paint on the petals and then blended the colors together. The students made the center of the flower using their fingertips. The students also painted sparkle Mod Podge on some of the petals and on the center of the flower.

Splatter Art

The kindergarten students created this work of art by splattering yellow, blue, and red tempera paint on the canvas. One student, Crystal, got so excited about painting that she made the purple colored stroke of paint near the center of the canvas. Mrs. Fugitt sealed with painting with sparkle Mod Podge.

Wheat Fields

This piece was inspired by Vincent Van Gogh. The students created this piece with tempera paints. The students took turns painting the sky, field and road. Cadence painted the moon.

Literature Unit: The Teddy Bears' Picnic

Last month we read The Teddy Bears' Picnic by Jimmy Kennedy. We did so many activities for this unit.

Math
We did an estimation activity. The kids had to estimate how many Teddy Grahams would fit in the teddy bear head. Then they covered the teddy bear head with Teddy Grahams and wrote down the actual answer.

We learned about five different types of bears and then we made a graph of our favorite bears.

We made picnic food patterns with markers.

We compared the shape of teddy bears.

We did bear ten frame addition. The students had to show the addition problem on a ten frame. Then they had to show the answer to the problem with stickers. They also had to write the answer to the problem.

The students practiced telling time.

Language Arts
We practiced beginning sounds with items you might see on a picnic.

We also did a beginning sounds cut and paste activity.

We made a class book about what our teddy bears did at the picnic.

Poetry
We wrote acrostic poems about bears.

Science
We read a book about bears and made a can, have, are chart about bears.

We made a bear and labeled the parts of a bear.

We sorted bear pictures into groups based on if they were living or nonliving.

We wrote a report about bears.

We also read a book about hibernation and talked about animals that hibernate.

Cooking
We talked about what bears eat. Then we made trail mix (freeze dried strawberries, Goldfish, Teddy Grahams, and Honey Comb cereal). They students said it was yummy.

Art
We made this teddy bear tissue paper art project.

Music
We sang these songs: The Ants Go Marching, Going On a Bear Hunt, and Teddy Bear Teddy Bear Turn Around.

Teddy Bear Picnic
We finished our unit with a surprise picnic. We had a three-legged race.

We did an egg on a spoon relay race.

We played parachute games.

We had a picnic lunch (sandwiches, Teddy Grahams, an orange, gummy bears, and water).

We played with balloons.

We played with bubbles.

We had a great time!
